PETITION TO MIAMI-DADE COUNTY TO PROVIDE ARSENIC TESTING
PETITION TO MIAMI-DADE COUNTY TO PROVIDE ARSENIC TESTING
INFORMATION SHEET
Dear Signor,
Thank you for your support for the collective efforts of International Slow Pitch Softball
(hereafter “ISPS”) to have softball/baseball players, staff, directors, umpires, fans & families from Chapman Field Park tested for arsenic poisoning, at
Miami-Dade County’s expense.
As you know, Miami-Dade County had begun testing parks in the county for possible
chemical contamination after a federal investigation in 2011 discovered dangerous levels of
chemical contamination at Olinda Park. Since this discovery, the following parks have also
showed contamination:
1) Amelia Earhart Park;
2) Boys & Girls Club of Miami-Kendall Unit;
3) Gwen Cherry Park;
4) Hammocks Community Park;
5) Ives Estates/Ojus Park;
6) Westwind Lakes Park;
7) Brothers to the Rescue Memorial Park;
8) Miami-Dade Regional Soccer Park;
9) Chapman Field Park.
The concern with many of us that frequent Chapman Park, is the potential for arsenic
exposure. The initial testing of May 23, 2014 showed amounts of 100 mg/kg, which is roughly
twenty-seven (27) times the allowable amount of 3.7 mg/kg. Testing was re-sampled on June 2,
2014 and June 11, 2014, which showed the highest concentrations in the outfield of the various
fields, ranging from 88.86 mg/kg to 102.68 mg/kg. Although it has been stressed that the area
does not pose significant health risks, very little assurance is had with what had been done.
ISPS cares about the safety of its players and their families. It is this continued ideal
which had prompted members to seek testing to be provided by Miami-Dade County. This
alone will provide the comfort for the recent developments at Chapman Field Park. We will provide
periodic updates, but please contact the following individuals for more information:
